Michaela Nessim was born in Sweden, experiencing the light from the north and the colour and culture from her Jamaican heritage. Multicultural origins have had a huge impact on her identity as an artist. Studying and working in London and Paris have also defined her as an individual and therefore impact her perception of art and beauty. As a painter she makes colour choices that are Caribbean inspired however, there is always a source of light which comes from her love of summer light in Scandinavia; the subject matter comes from her surroundings. Nessim considers herself a Canadian artist who speaks her own visual language based on her background.
“My belief is that colour and light can heal and create a window in your space for you to look through and feel content, healed and energized. I am inspired by the impressionists but all my current work is a symbolic representation of reality and not a rendition of what I am looking at so my work has become more abstract over time.”
